A Novel Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converters Based on Dual Half-bridge Reconstructed Submodule for Fault Blocking
The DC faults can impose adverse influence on reliable operation of modular multilevel converter (MMC) and damage the elements in MMC. The DC fault handling based on the SM with blocking capability is an effective protection method. In this paper
several kinds of SM capable of DC fault blocking are analyzed in detail. The study results show that the three-level blocking SM are superior to other types of blocking SM in the handling of DC fault. Afterward
a dual half-bridge reconstructed three-level blocking SM is proposed in this paper. With the three-level feature
the proposed SM can output twice the operating voltages of the conventional full-bridge SM (FBSM). Moreover
the SM can provide twice the blocking capability of the FBSM. Different from the existing three-level SM
the positive and negative ends of the proposed SM are connected by two cascaded reverse-blocking switches. Owing to this structure
the MMC with the proposed SM can further reduce operating loss on the basis of the similar costs as the MMC with the existing three-level SM. Finally
the feasibility of the proposed SM is verified by simulation results.
